UPDATE: Russia cannot help Greece with debt issues–pres spokesman
(Adds new headline, details in lede, second paragraph)
MOSCOW, Jun 30 (PRIME) -- Russia is closely monitoring the Greek events but it is unable to help the country in its debt repayment struggle, spokesman for the president Dmitry Peskov told reporters Tuesday.
“You know, this is a question worth asking Greece, firstly and a question of relations between Greece and creditors but this is not our issue. We will repeat once again, we are looking closely at how the events are unfolding there,” Peskov said.
A source in the Russian government told PRIME earlier on Tuesday that only a multilateral institute can help Greece to overcome the debt crisis, and asking Russia for aid will be of no use.
“Bearing in mind the amount of debt liabilities which Greece has now, only a multilateral institute will be able to provide real help in struggle with the crisis, no country can. They have not asked us,” he said.
Athens earlier turned down creditors’ conditions in an offer to restructure debt. The country can default on the debt if the E.U. refuses to provide an aid payment on Tuesday. The negotiations on debt repayment will continue in either case but if Greece dismisses all further proposals the consequences can be as dire as expulsion from the euro zone.
